Can you feel the autumn equinox coming? Our tree Can you feel the autumn equinox coming?

Our trees and shrubs are laden with ripe berries and nuts. Grasses are shooting up firecracker seed plumes. Everywhere you look, plants are already feeling the hope of next spring, preparing to sow their seeds. The verdant foliage of summer is just beginning to blush with warm shades of crimson and gold.

We love this time of year. As the nighttime temperatures dip and the rain comes, it's a perfect time to plant woodies like Chionanthus virginicus, a dioecious small tree bearing deep plum jewels on female specimens. Another beauty, Malus 'Ralph Shay' will stop you in your tracks with its huge and prolific ornamental crabapples. Or maybe you need a fruiting Cornus mas, with edible, oblong red fruits whose astringency will pucker your lips if eaten before they are dead ripe and sweet. And of course, Viburnums of any persuasion deserve a spot in your garden so the birds (and you) can enjoy the berry show and spectacular fall foliage.

The moral of the story is plant, then plant again, then plant some more. Don't let the cold set in without dirtying your hands a few more times.

Visit our nursery everyday from 9-5.

One of the shrubs we love right now is Arrowwood v One of the shrubs we love right now is Arrowwood viburnum (Viburnum dentatum). This is a gorgeous, versatile native shrub with heaps of late season interest.
Creamy white flowers in spring are followed by these lustrous, porcelain-blue berries in late summer- a favorite food source for songbirds. As the season cools, the foliage turns fiery shades of red, orange, and yellow, making it a stunning back drop for autumn-blooming perennials like anemones, asters and ornamental grasses.
